No Big Deal

if ever you need a big laugh, you should watch these doha debates on bbc.

i was watching this thing today and the motion was
'this house believes that after gaza, arab unity is dead and buried'
i cannot think of a reason why they shud come up with such a 'no-more' topic in the first place.

everyone knows to what extent arab unity lies
and there really is no need to create a fuss about it.
i mean why cannot they rest the matter.
as one of the participant said it all lies in sitting back and discussing/chatting.
that's it. they wont go any further than that.

one of the panelist who talked for the motion implied all the people are united
and the only problem lies with the leaders.
i was laughing when the moderator asked if he meant that their leaders are not people:)
lolx
the dull and reluctant reply was 'they are people with different agendas'
i cannot stop wondering what those agendas might be..

it was voted for the motion and concluded that arab unity is dead and buried.
a good conclusion, isn't it?

Arab tribalism has a millenia-old history, thus even dating far way back than Islam itself. Arabs are more proud of their tribalism than with Islam (religion) itself. Ask any Arab who they are, and they will give their identity as "I am a (tribe name) first and Muslim second."

So this "Islamic unity" is a myth. Prophet Mohamed first tried to forge Arab unity under the umbrella of Islamic "Ummah" (Nation) but he failed too naturally because there is nothing common among Arabs except Islam which is just a "new" thing compared to millenia of warfare and tribalism.

The conflict between the Arab world and Iran is the most obvious example of this. Iran is the only country which has a different language, Persian or "Faarisee" language, and therefore a source of conflict with the rest of the Middle East (a situation which America is exploiting to the full).

Arabs were always a people at war with each other. There is little change in that attitude even today. So like most Maldivians they like to live in self-denial and dupe themselves that there is such a thing as "Arab unity" or its offshoot "Islamic unity."
